According to the reports, Riyadh has been the center of attention in leading building projects providing construction licenses all over Saudi Arabia. As compared to the major cities of Arabia, Riyadh have took a great share of 30% approximately acquiring 24,084 licenses in 2012-2013 term as provided in the statistical repot released by the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs of Saudi Arabia.
The report also contained statistical data of construction licenses of other cities with Makah on second position after Riyadh, with 17,261 licenses. Then there are other cities to follow including Easter Province with 16,805 licenses after that Al-Qasim with 10,355 licenses and other cities like Asir, Hail ,Tabuk, Al-Jouf, Madinah, Northern Border, Jazzan and Al-Baha with 6,284, 4,281, 3,764, 3,238 3,007, 1,668, 1,357, with 1,222 licenses respectively in the orders they were presented.
Talal Samarqandi, chairman of the Committee for Engineering Offices Chamber said there are 198,000 licensed companies in the contracting sector in Saudi Arabia with more than four million workers which has witnessed a great variation from the last two years in construction development sector and in different fields which are related to it. One of the reasons of biggest rate in construction licenses in residential sector is the government efforts of providing its citizens with housing facility.
The efforts were to provide home for the people who come to Saudi Arabia for working purposes in great quantity. Mr. Samarqandi, quoted “there are more than four million workers in the contracting sector, 95 percent of whom are foreigners and just five percent of whom are Saudi’’.
Experts from Saudi Arabia have told the reporters of bad performance of these foreign workers lead to poor construction projects. These workers have little and no experience in construction sectors which leads them to make specialized institutes which provides the basic training to these workers and also to train young Saudi people as the ratio of Saudi people in construction projects is shocking.
Talal Samarqandi also claimed that the construction industry is the biggest in terms of training these foreigners from all over the globe. “They are recruited from their original countries without having any skills or experiences in the construction sector. They start working in the construction sector’’ he added.
Around 60 billion Saudi riyals per year are wasted in construction projects as a result of poor implementation and materials used in building which damages the interest, demanding a system to train contractors. In the light of increasing projects, as report, there is a solid need to implement on the strategies that will be beneficial for the government and people of Saudi Arabia.
